Talent
Matters.
Whether
you are a hiring manager charged with filling lots of open jobs or a manager
trying to build out the talent of your team, your responsibility to choose well
among the candidates can weigh very heavily. Because your work force is truly
your competitive advantage, you need to hire only the best and keep them
happily engaged.
If
your goal is to bring aboard those with the right talent yet not waste precious
time in the hiring process, experts in the field of behavior based interviewing
have two recommendations:
- Be Clear and Picky. Winnow the field of candidates by being very specific and demanding in your job specifications. There is no need to talk to interviewees who don’t have all the qualifications you need. You might even discourage all but the very committed by describing the true culture at your company (not what is on your website) in a way that filters out further “unsuitables.”
- Get Expert Help. Unless you are very experienced at interviewing and have a record of success, outsource this function so you are presented with a final, few of the most promising candidates from which to choose.
