To Get the Right Job - Ask “Below the Surface” Questions

What do you really know about your potential new job? Do you know enough?

You have done your research. It seems perfect…on the surface anyway. It is a job that will make good use of your skills, the company is sound, the salary is what you had hoped for, and the location will work well for you. Is there anything you are missing?

Behavior based interview training experts say Yes. You have not asked all the right questions. You need to go below the surface to make sure that you will be a good cultural fit.

Much of your overall job satisfaction will depend on how well you get along with your manager and how well you mesh with the rest of the team. It is important to find out as much as you can ahead of time about your potential new manager’s style and the organization’s culture. Ask who your manager will be and find out how they manage. Then determine if you would be a good fit.

Then ask about the organizational cultural.  Determine how things really get done – especially when no one is looking.  Identify what separates low from high performers.  See if you think you would be set up to succeed.  If you like a lot of structure, for instance, you will not be happy in a more free-wheeling culture where independence and the ability to handle ambiguity are highly valued.

Then, and only then, you will have a better idea if the job is right for you.
