Take a Tip from the Best Interviewers – Effective Questions

The next time you are watching the PBS News Hour or an interviewer you admire, pay attention to the way they ask the most critical questions. They:

  1. Pose a question
  2. Listen to the response
  3. And then pause
They don’t fill the silence right away with the next or a follow-up question. Instead they allow some space for the interviewee to elaborate. And this is where you get the richest information. Especially when you are trying to gather more than surface replies, listen slowly to your job candidate and they may reveal more than they had intended about the behavioral competencies and motivations that you are looking for in a new employee.

Interviewees are more and more sophisticated these days and have probably scripted and practiced answers to your most likely questions. But, as behavior based interviewing training professionals know, what you really need are answers that will help you better predict behavior on the job. Give the candidate room to expand their answer, go in a new direction, or share something unexpected. This is the way to dig deeper and learn more about their heart and their head.
