How to Put Your Target Job Candidates at Ease

The more relaxed your job candidate in the interview, the more accurate your picture of them.

Unless a key success criterion is their ability to perform under unexpected circumstances and pressure, there is nothing to be gained by adding to their stress. How can you relieve their anxiety so they perform at their best and you are able to assess their true potential for the job?

Unless figuring out situations is a desired core competency, behavior based interviewing training experts recommend that you prepare interviewees for what to expect when you meet face-to-face. Tell them about the interviewing process at your company. Who and where will they meet? Who will conduct the interviews and how many people will be in the room? What is the accepted dress code? You might even tell them what topics you plan to discuss.

The objective? Making job candidates as comfortable as possible so you have an opportunity to more accurately evaluate their fitness for the role. If they are “hot under the collar,” your conversation will be less professional and certainly less productive.
